Roar too sharp for Jets

Brisbane Roar FC came away from Wanderers Oval in Newcastle this afternoon with a 3-2 win, moving them back into the top 4 and consigning the home side to all-so-ran status, despite an impressive showing.

It was a milder day than the two scorchers beforehand, with a breeze from the Tennis Court end, and a lush pitch. Both teams relished the conditions putting on an exhibition of fast flowing football.

For the first half the Jets threw down the challenge, matching their higher credentialled visitors.

A fourth minute corner from the right had the shot blocked and a few minutes later, Michaela Hatzirodos playing a target role up front almost intercepted a lazy backpass.

In the 11th minute Jets defender Stacey Day was alert to a ball through for Emily Gielnik and closed down her shot, with the ball skewing wide of the post.

The Roar almost got ahead in the 12th minute when the ball eluded 'keeper Eliza Campbell from the corner, but Hannah Brewer cleared off the goal-line.

In the 16th minute Tiffany Boshers laid a rising ball in from the right, and Emily van Egmond got the faintest of deflections on it with a backheader. It fell to the Jets livewire American Tori Huster, who slammed it home. 1-0

Two minutes later Brisbane's 'keeper Hoshima Kishi made an acrobatic dive to push the ball past her left upright.

Laura Alleway got forward in the 25th minute but her shot was blocked, and the Roar struggled to penetrate the screen put up by Day and Hayley Crawford. Hatzirodos pressed and perhaps could have done better with two chances.

After the break the visitors came out with more fire in their bellies. Gielnik broke from her markers and hit two shots that went wide, and then Larna Harch drew a fine save from Campbell in the 50th minute.

In the 54th minute Amy Chapman latched onto a loose ball following a corner, and hit it home from 25m. 1-1

In the 61st minute referee Katie Patterson judged Hayley Crawford to have held Emily Gielnik in the area, and awarded a penalty. Gielnik took it herself and blasted it into the top left corner. 1-2

It looked like the Roar would go on with it, but with the Jets regrouping they pressed higher. Boshers again was supplier, with a 70th minute ball in from the right to Gema Simon, who half headed and half deflected the ball on and down, across the goaline. 2-2

This stirred the visitors to lift again, and in the 80th minute Elise Kellond-Knight curled a long free kick from the right, over to the running Clare Polkinghorne on the left, who headed in. A well rehearsed dead-ball moment I'd say. 2-3

Campbell held firm against a couple of half-chances but despite a good showing by the home-side the Roar were worthy winners on the day.
