St George FC have moved straight into the NSW NPL 2 Grand Final in two weeks time, with a solid and hard fought 2-1 win over Macarthur Rams at Jensen Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Saints have a long pedigree and being Premiers in the league season gone only added to that lustre as their Major Semi-Final began. Macarthur Rams have an impressive pedigree too, though not quite as long and high-flying. It promised to be a great game in front of a smallish crowd.
It started very well for the Premiers as David Dascal scored direct from a free kick well within two minutes in. The curling strike from 30m on the right sailed over the mass in the box, and dropped into the top left corner as Rams ‘keeper Chad Taylor saw it late and despite diving at full stretch to his right. 1-0
With the Rams playing it on the break down the middle, and Saints turning over possession in midfield the game that was played at pace but took some time to recover from that early rythm jolt.
It was the Saints who settled first, with a lovely through ball by Bruno Pivato into the untracked movement of Juan Chavez, in the 35th minute. With time, the veteran striker allowed the ball to run until he could angle it past Chad Taylor and into the right side of goal. 2-0
Just before the whistle Almir Dizdaric tested Saints ‘keeper Dion Shaw with a curling shot, but the glove-man was able to push it wide.
After half-time Macarthur came out strongly, seeking to overturn the pending result. Shannon Hankin got up high to a ball but his header glanced over, and Alvaro Malmierca was closed down by Costa Andricopoulos in the area as he was about the shoot.
In the 60th minute Shannon Hankin drifted in at the far post on the right, and with the left side free-kick hanging he put a diving header into the net. 2-1
As the game moved into brief stoppage time the Rams drew a parry out of Dion Shaw, but the rebound was hit straight back for him to block. Last gasp nerves perhaps but Shaw had to take a hopeful ball at a second attempt just before the whistle but there was no real pressure.
In Saturday’s semi Mounties Wanderers 1 (Daniel Severino 13’) defeated Fraser Park 0, so Mounties will face the Rams next week. St George Saints will play a game against Sydney FC at WIN Jubilee Oval in Kogarah on Wednesday night (11th September – kick off 7pm) – STOP ‘PRESS’ result was St George 2 v Sydney FC 1
