Sydney FC 2
(Alessandro Del Piero 36’, Joel Chianese 60’)
Newcastle Jets FC 0

The Hyundai A-League 2013-2014 season has finally powered on with Sydney FC dominating in a 2-0 win over Newcastle Jets.

Sydney FC were missing key players Pascal Bosschaart, Brett Emerton, Corey Gameiro and Terry McFlynn; while Newcastle Jets were missing marquee striker Emile Heskey. Short-term injury replacement Matt Thompson was signed by Sydney at the last minute to help accommodate the team’s high injury toll.

The first attempt on goal was from Sydney FC in the seventh minute, following some good lead up play from Thompson, who dribbled the ball and passed to Ali Abbas, whose shot from outside the penalty area went straight to Newcastle Jets goalkeeper Mark Brighitti.

Overall the first 22 minutes of the match lacked decent football but there was excitement in the 23rd minute when Sydney FC captain Alessandro Del Piero played a great through ball on the right to Joel Chianese. However Chianese’s first touch was poor and the ball was easily gathered by Brighitti.

A great opportunity for Sydney FC was prevented with some luck where in the 26th minute. A pass from Abbas allowed Thompson to strike a half volley from outside the box that rocketed off the crossbar and somehow rebounded to hit the back of Brighitti but did not go into the back of the net.

Sydney’s dominance was rewarded with the first goal in the Hyundai A-League season 9 in the 36th minute. Del Piero was allowed to run past several defenders through the Newcastle penalty area. Connor Chapman and Zenon Caravella ran into each other, leaving Del Piero with the ball. Del Piero rounded Caravella and shot from the edge of the goal box across the face of goal and into the bottom right hand corner of the net. Sydney FC 1-0.

With half time looming, Del Piero had control of the ball from 30 yards out, dribbled close to the penalty area sent a shot blazing over the bar.

The early stages of the second half were very quiet but this changed in the 60th minute. Sydney FC made it 2-0 with Del Piero splitting the defence open with a side foot pass to Chianese on his right. Chianese slammed the ball into the roof of the net leaving Brighitti with no chance. Sydney FC 2-0.

A great cross out wide from Newcastle allowed the ball to go in the middle of the 18 yard box, where Adam Taggart attempted a floating header that just went over the crossbar —Newcastle’s best chance of the match so far.

In the 68th minute, a dubious free kick was given to Newcastle at the edge of the 18 yard box that allowed Craig Goodwin to strike the ball with his left foot straight to Sydney goalkeeper Verdan Janjetovic.

As the match was heading to its conclusion, Sydney FC had a great chance to make it 3-0, however the goal was disallowed after Richard Garcia and Ali Abbas had their shots saved by Brighitti and the rebound went to Chianese who put the ball in the net from an offside position.

In time added on, Newcastle Jets had their best chance to score when captain Ruben Zadkovich took a free kick at the edge of the area that went to Jacob Pepper to glance a header onto the crossbar.
