Adelaide United 1
(Alexandra Gummer 31’)

A goal in stoppage time saved Western Sydney Wanderers some embarrassment in its opening game of the 2013-14 season against Adelaide United.

Playing a relatively inexperienced Adelaide squad, Wanderers had several good chances midway through the first half but the visitors scored first through Alexandra Gummer after Wanderers failed to clear during a scramble in their penalty area.

In rainy conditions at Marconi Stadium, Catherine Cannuli and Emily van Egmond had been looking good for Wanderers as was captain Kristy Moore for Adelaide.

Wanderers keeper Dimi Poulos came out well to dive at the feet of Tiarn Powell and her counterpart, Melissa Barbieri, made a great save in her goal box when Wanderers forwards were too slow to strike a loose ball.

In the 58th minute Moore collected the ball in midfield and ran on to goal, hitting a reasonable shot.

Shawna Gordon cleaned up chasing back as Adelaide were looking to set up another shot.

A cross from Jenna Kingsley on the right bounced just beyond the left post and in the 76th minute Adelaide got away on a promising break down the right. Moore was unable to connect with the cross despite a mighty effort.

Wanderers had a shot deflected for a corner. Victoria Huster headed down to the right post but Barbieri denied her. Minutes later Barbieri was on the ground again stopping a shot from the right.

In the 83rd minute Poulos ventured far out of her penalty area to halt a run by Tegan Riding. Riding got the better of the encounter but her shot went wide of the open goal and Isabel Hodgson arrived too late to guide the ball home.

A blast from van Egmond was deflected wide and in the 84th minute Moore had the chance to seal the match for Adelaide but, with only Poulos to beat, was wayward with her chip.

The game became more frenetic as the clock wound down. Cannuli shot wide from the left side of the box in the 86th minute but she was rewarded in stoppage time as Adelaide attempted to keep Wanderers at bay. Cannuli struck from wide on the right and Barbieri should have done better, the ball slipping through her gloves.

Michelle Carney might have provided a second for Wanderers but was decked attempting to head a fierce cross from the left.
