Perth Glory took away 3 points from an all-action 5-3 win over Newcastle Jets in front of a bumper crowd at Wanderers Oval in Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.
The crowd was still finding a seat in the humid and sunny afternoon as Novocastrian Kate Gill slotted away number 1, for Glory. Latching onto an early cross she steered the ball past young Jets ‘keeper Eliza Campbell. 0-1
The perfect reply, as the Jets recovered their composure, was made by ex Brisbane Roar Hannah Beard 4 minutes later. She got onto the end of a cross from Tara Andrews to score past Glory ‘keeper, US import, Chantel Jones.1-1
Glory captain Collette McCallum regained the lead ten minutes into the first half, when she slammed the ball high over a stretching custodian Campbell (photo above) 1-2
The game was end to end, belying the hot conditions (a drink break in the first half was testimony to that).
In the 35th minute Glory’s import from Russia, Christina Julien, found herself free in range but sent her shot over the crossbar.
Newcastle got a reward for their persistence, when referee Katie Patterson awarded a penalty against the visitors. Keeper Jones had bundled over livewire Hannah Brewer. Tara Andrews lifted it into the top right corner of the net. 2-2
Slightly cooler in the second half, the game continued on its breakneck pace. Two minutes in McCallum sent a free kick uncharacteristically ove the bar, and then two minutes after that tara Andrews rounded the Glory keeper after a lovely through ball, but sent her angled shot also over the bar.
In the 66th minute, as the young Jets perhaps tired mentally, and the Glory made early changes, Christina Julien this time sent her shot high into the net. 2-3
Substitute Rosie Sutton extended the lead in the 81st minute with a chip over the advancing Campbell. 2-4
Campbell was called on to make a number of top class saves and the Glory wound up the pressure.
Drama into stoppage time, when Campbell appeared to be impeded in turning back to cover her goal after attemtping to clear. Referee Patterson was less convinced and copped a spray from Campbell and Day, the keeper receiving a yellow card. Marianna Tabain made the most of the confusion to sink her shot, which stood, and Glory ran out winners 5-2.
A wonderful game on a great surface in front of a good and involved crowd.
