A strong Melbourne Victory Youth side had to be patient to defeat local rivals Heart in their rather lacklustre derby clash on a cold Sunday evening.

Two goals in the last five minutes to Andrew Nabbout and Jesse Makarounas sealed the points for the home side, who had battled hard all evening and finally found the breakthrough.

Both sides went into the game unbeaten, with Heart winning twice on the road while Victory drew with Brisbane and defeated the AIS in their first two rounds.

The game was a frustrating one to watch for the most part, as both sides effectively cancelled each other out in midfield.

Victory included Andrew Nabbout, Gui Finkler, Rashid Mahazi, Nick Ansell, Scott Galloway and Lawrence Thomas from the squad that travelled to Sydney, significantly bolstering their line-up.

Heart were the ones with the first half chance of the game, as Ross Archibald rose high to head a free kick straight at Lawrence Thomas after just five minutes.

It was proving to be more of a tactical battle, and when both sides found themselves with promising situations, the final moments let them down.

First Galloway flashed a chance wide from a left wing cross, then Heart’s Ersin Kaya stumbled over his first touch just when he looked to be in behind the defence.

That was the story of much of the game, and just as the match looked like it was limbering towards a bore draw, Victory produced a moment of quality that changed the game in the 86th minute.

Substitute Anthony Proia picked up the ball on the right wing, and played an early cross onto the chest of Andrew Nabbout, who unleashed a half volley towards goal.

Marko Stevanja in goal for Heart has been in good form in recent weeks, but he failed to keep the ball out on this occasion, seeing Nabbout’s shot go through his despairing dive.

As Heart tried to push for an equaliser, Victory exploited spaces left by Heart and eventually sealed the result with the match heading into stoppage time.

Andrew Nabbout drove towards the top of the 18 yard box, and set up an on-coming Jesse Makarounas who simply applied a clinical finish past Stevanja to make it 2-0.

Victory almost had a third, but Proia’s left foot shot, cutting in from the right wing was tame and well saved by Stevanja.

In a way it was an unbelievable finish, given the lack of goalmouth action throughout the entire game, but Victory remained patient and Heart cracked first, allowing the home side to move into second on the National Youth League table.
