Central Coast Mariners FC went down 1-0 to their old foes Brisbane Roar FC in Gosford on Sunday, with a crowd of 8,303 out on a cool and damp evening.

A scorching strike from Roar’s substitute Kwame Yeboah in the penultimate minute of normal time was all that separated the two sides.
It was a very balanced game with neither side being able to make many chances as the midfield battles raged.

The best chance in the first half was to Henrique who drew a top notch diving save out of debuting home ‘keeper Liam Reddy.

A controversial decision by referee Ben Williams to over-rule his far side assistant and deny a penalty call for hand-ball against an otherwise excellent James Donachie was the talking point of the half time break.

The second half saw more chances with Franjic and Henrique drawing saves out of Liam Reddy. Henrique hit a ball in the 77th minute that nutmegged Reddy, but was cleared off the line by Trent Sainsbury backing up.

The best chance for the home side was a swerving, possibly deflected, shot from range on the left by Joshua Rose. Alas for the home fans it cannoned off the left upright.

A substitution made by Roar coach Mike Mulvey in the 87th minute turned master stroke, as Kwame Yeboah received the ball 25m out side on to goal. He was given space to turn left and in a fluid movement sent the ball high into the net with Reddy grasping to cover. 0-1

Returning Daniel McBreen, who had a frustrated night ‘not quite connecting’ with Marcos Flores, hit a good chance just over the crossbar a minute later; but it was not the Mariners evening.

After being quizzed about the hand-ball call he went on to admit that, “as a team we gave the ball away too cheap, and we hurt ourselves. When you give the ball away as much as we did then you are going to get punished by a good side like Brisbane. Brisbane probably deserved to win … anyone who finishes ahead of them is going to be successful this season.”

“If Liam Reddy gets man of the match, that says enough”, he added. “Extra sessions in the next fortnight”, he predicted.
