Western Sydney Wanderers FC 1 (Catherine Cannuli 43’)
defeated by
Brisbane Roar FC 4 (Katrina Gorry 49’, 81’, 90,’ Hayley Raso 51’)

This was a comfortable win for Brisbane. The visitors even looked comfortable in the first half, despite Wanderers’ long periods of possession.

Even at half time, when Wanderers were leading 1-0, it was more than likely that Brisbane would come out with intent in the second half and put away three goals.

That’s what I told my daughter. But I was wrong. Brisbane scored four.

Half way through the first half Wanderers were enjoying pushing the ball around while Brisbane sat back — leaving Larissa Crummer forward — and keeping Wanderers away from the Roar penalty area. Emily Van Egmond blasted away from 20 metres. Catherine Cannuli wasted possession with a wide shot from 25 metres.

By the 42nd minute it was still Wanderers with the apparent upper hand and Brisbane conceding fouls in an effort to stem the red and black flow forward.

Shawna Gordon beat Clare Polkinghorne, heading a free kick to the right of goal. And in the 43rd minute Cannuli made room for herself 20 metres from goal and this time dropped her shot under the crossbar.

A free kick by Elise Kellond-Knight from the left sideline wasn’t held by Wanderers’ Dimitra Poulos under pressure from Laura Alleway, Polkinghorne forced the ball past the falling keeper and across the face of goal but Alleway’s shot was blocked by Camille Levin on the goal line and then Gordon cleared away from Polkinghorne.

A key contributor to Brisbane’s second half revival was Hayley Raso, replacing Crummer at half time. Raso was fast and early on made a strong run into Wanderers’ penalty area before being outmanoeuvred by Cooper. Then Cooper turned to villain, fouling Katrina-Lee Gorry in the box, giving away a penalty. Gorry sent Poulos the wrong way and the scores were level.

Within minutes Raso swooped onto a through ball, Poulos had no chance, and Brisbane were ahead.

Wanderers, not yet beaten, were strong attacking Brisbane along the goal line to the left of goal. The cross was decent but Brisbane cleared from the goal box.

A left foot shot from Vedrana Popovic did not trouble Poulos. But Poulos had to make a good save on a shot from Kellond-Knight before Polkinghorne tried to catch Poulos off her line, rushing the shot wide.

In the 76th minute Gorry hit a screamer from 30 metres, the ball flying past the right upright. Amy Chapman then struck wide from a similar distance after a poor Brisbane corner.

Helen Petinos, for Wanderers, looked on a good break but was offside.

In the 81st minute Gorry scored an easy goal after a cross from Chapman initially flew over her head. But Wanderers fluffed the clearance, leaving the ball at Gorry’s feet for a simple tap in. Wanderers were losing 1-3.

Gorry hit another long drive, this time on target, but Poulos got down well to save.

Then Gorry found space eight metres outside the Wanderers penalty area and ran on for an uncontested shot. Wanderers were losing 1-4.

Raso seemed to have a similar opportunity but was just offside. Then Kate Stewart saved at the feet of Van Egmond.

With the game almost over Polkinghorne attempted another whopping shot from 30 metres but the ball sailed harmlessly high.
