Canberra United bounced back from last weekend’s defeat with an away win 3-0 over table cellar dwellers Newcastle Jets.
In only their second home game this season the Jets were looking to get a first win; and a sunny day but with cooling breeze, and smallish but vocal crowd, seemed an ideal time to do it.
Canberra United’s pedigree shone through however over the young Novocastrians as early as the 5th minute when sustained pressure down the left by US import Stephanie Ochs led to Jets’s ‘keeper Eliza Campbell spilling the ball but Sally Rojahn skewed her shot across goal from the left.
Three minutes later Matilda Michelle Heyman swung the ball goal-ward only for it to stick between the knees of Stacey Day, who carefully freed herself and cleared the ball.
In the 8th minute Heyman dispossessed Hannah Brewer of the ball, but her shot went wide on the left.
It was Ochs who opened the scoring when she bent a shot from 25m, into the top right of goal leaving Campbell no chance. 0-1
Just one minute later Heyman extended Canberra’s lead with a run from midfield that ended when Campbell came out to smother but couldn’t hold the ball, and Heyman slotted it in to goal. 0-1
In the 23rd minute Canberra’s Matilda’s goalkeeper Lydia Williams was forced to save a shot from Rahli Dobson who had run in from the left unimpeded, and unleashed on target.
In the 38th minute a speculator from distance using the strengthening wind, rebounded off the crossbar.
Newcastle were having real trouble getting midfielders Gema Simon and Tara Andrews involved, and not isolated.
After the break, again Canberra tested the woodwork, in fact twice. The second in the 52nd minute was when Heyman hit into the wind and the ball curled down onto the bar. The ball came back out to Canberra and Ochs hit her shot at an angle into the right side of goal from the left. 0-3
In the 65th minute Nicole Sykes made a great weaving run, sending defenders the wrong way but Elizabeth Campbell was equal to the effort, parrying the swirling shot away.
Ellie Brush had a free header for Canberra off a corner form the left, but Campbell had it covered.
The Jets were striving to get back into it as the breeze eased but cooled the players. From a run down the right Rahli Dobson skied a shot over in the last minutes of normal time.
One minute later Hannah Brewer’s shot was palmed around the post by Williams. Then Williams again denied the home side, this time Hannah Beard seeing the custodian slide to cover the shot with her legs.
The win keeps Canberra in fine position, but Newcastle still looking for something from their efforts for the league table.
