Central Coast Slip Up
by Chris Dunkerley:
AFC Asian Champions League – Group F – Game 5 – Home Leg
7:30pm, Wednesday 16 April, 2014
at Central Coast Stadium, Gosford.
Central Coast Mariners FC 0
Seoul FC 1 (og John Hutchinson 90’+2)
Mariners skipper John Hutchinson, in an attempt to clear, hit the ball past Central Coast custodian Liam Reddy and into the net in stoppage time on Wednesday night.
Choi Yong-soo’s FC Seoul team will depart Sydney for Seoul Thursday morning with three vital Group F points to their credit.
It was a game of two halves, of goal-keeping heroics, and last minute drama.
The first saw the Mariners take the game solidly to their K-League opponents and create a number of opportunities that they were not able to put into the net.
As an example in the 3rd minute a great ball over the top to Matt Simon allowed the big man to turn lithely an strike firmly but the shot was blocked. Six minutes later Joshua Rose, who gave Seoul gried all game, pushed into the penalty area on the left, and seeing a gap cut in forcing FC Seoul ‘keeper Kim Yong Dae into a three reflex saves.
Gradually the visitors pushed them back enough to luanch raids. Cha Du Ri hit the underside of the cross-bar, and Rafael, and Sergio Escudero both shot on incisive runs but were wide of the goal.
The second half saw the visitors pushing the home side further and further back, but some great sweeping and blocking by Mariners ‘keeper Liam Reddy kept them out. Late chances to the Mariners were just that, chances.
Just as it was looking to be shared points in stoppage time, another attack by the visitors, saw Hutchinson attempting to clear a ball into the area by Kim Jin-kyu, that perhaps he should have led Reddy deal with, and instead of hitting it over Dane Drive he weakly pushed it in to his own goal with Reddy stranded.
Mariners coach Phil Moss said after the game, “I am very disappointed with the result, obviously, but the first thing we did in there [the change rooms] was put our arm around ‘Hutch’ [Hutchinson] and made sure he stayed positive,” “He’s [Hutchinson] a great leader, and the first thing he is talking about is Saturday’s semi-final and getting back on the horse.”
“We’ve got recovery tomorrow [Thursday] morning, we’ll get together, everyone will have a smile on their face and we’ll move forward. We’ve got no time to dwell, no time to feel sorry for ourselves, so it’s about getting up for Saturday’s game which I have no doubt we will, he added.”
Tuesday’s other 2014 AFC Champions League Group F match ended in a 2-2 draw between China’s Beijing Guoan and reigning J.League champions Hiroshima in the Chinese capital.
That result ensures the Mariners are placed equal second with 2 others, but leading on count-back, after five of six matchdays in this year’s edition of Asia’s most prestigious club competition, so a win will be, or a draw in Japan next week may, be sufficient enough to see Central Coast qualify for the round of 16.
Central Coast Mariners will depart for Japan early on Sunday morning, after playing Josep Gombau’s Adelaide Reds in the Hyundai A-League sudden-death final in Gosford on Saturday afternoon.
