NNSW – National Premier League – Round 3
2:45pm, Monday 21 April, 2014
at Adamstown Oval

Adamstown Rosebud FC 3
South Cardiff Gunners FC 2

Adamstown Rosebud overcame a combative South Cardiff by three goals to two on a lush Adamstown Oval surface on Easter Monday.

Adamstown Rosebud had a difficult introduction to the Newcastle top level after 8 years out, with a 1-5 defeat by Newcastle Jets Youth and having their opening round clash against Broadmeadow Magic postponed twice. South Cardiff were also win-less.

In a quite entertaining game, both teams had come to play football. Cardiff’s more direct approach stood them in good stead in the early part of the first half but in the second half Adamstown’s passing game eventually told.

A great save by the Gunners ‘keeper in the 6th minute off a close range volley set the scene.

South Cardiff struck in the 15th minute, with a goal steered accurately in off a corner by Daniel Johnson. 0-1

With Cardiff’s direct approach being held, Rosebud hit the crossbar with a header in the 30th minute.

Ten minutes later Adamstown hit the top right corner of the post with the keeper beaten, but it bounced to safety.

After the break the hosts stepped up their pressure, with a 2nd minute equaliser. From a raid up the right, the ground cross was met with sweetly weighted shot by Nick Bale past Gunners custodian  Michael Stafford.  1-1

Three minutes later Rosebud took the lead, with a neat pass, and ball steered in, again by Nick Bale. 2-1

South Cardiff got back level in the 67th minute with a run down the right by Dean Holt that beat the offside trap, and a shot that easily beat the keeper. 2-2

It looked for all the world like it would end a draw, but in the 89th minute sustained play at the edge of the Gunners box ended with space to shoot for  Steve Rospigliosi, and he did, successfully. Ended 3-2

Under 22 – Adamstown 3  v  South Cardiff 3
Under 19 – Adamstown 1  v  South Cardiff 1

A footnote of real note is that Adamstown Rosebud FC are coming up to their 125th anniversary – yes 125 years old!
