Queensland’s Brisbane Strikers were ultimately too good for the dauntless Broadmeadow Magic at Wanderers Oval last night, winning 2-1 after extra time.
On the first night of the newly launched FFA Cup, round of 32 matches, which saw both Northern NSW teams go out (South Cardiff Gunners on penalties in Melbourne), it was a good night for Brisbane as two teams from the north won theirs (Olympic FC the other).
The game started slowly, with both teams feeling to other out as an unknown quantity.
Broameadow’s Matthew Paul had a free header as early as the 8th minute but it was a weak loop to the keeper, while Tippett and Casciaroli also got into threatening positions, but it would be wrong to say Magic were on top as these breaks were the exception. The Strikers build up play was much more effective and it was only solid defensive work that was keeping them at bay.
That said, the first half was pretty uneventful despite Magic’s veteran midfielder Peter Haynes glancing header in the 32nd minute being palmed away one-handed by the Strikers own veteran, goalkeeper Michael Turnbull. 0-0 at the break.
The second half saw more action despite or because of the tiring legs on both sides.
Broadmeadow went ahead against the run of play, in the 58th minute. Scott Pettit robbed a ball on the right and pushed forward. He slipped the ball to Rhys Tippett, whose return pass found the Magic man in the box. Brisbane’s David Salin could not close him down, and Pettit sliped the ball across goal and into the net past a grasping Turnbull. 1-0
This enlivened the game. Within 2 minutes Brisbane had brought them back square. A free Matthew Thurtell slammed the ball to his left and into the net, after receiving a header back to him in the area. 1-1
In the 82nd minute the visitors almost had the lead. A long ball over the top to Thurtell. As he chased the ball toward the home side’s penalty area Magic’s keeper Chris Bowling came out to take. At the same time however fullback Joshua Piddington clatted into the back of Thurtell just outside the area.
Referee Tim McGilchrist fairly red carded Piddington for his tackle from behind, but inexplicably pointed to the penalty spot. The penalty taken by Keenan Duimpies was however saved by the alert custodian Chris Bowling.
The game moved into fatiguing extra time, with Broadmeadow one man down.
13 minutes in, Brisbane substitute Jonty Richter sent a free kick into the area, finding Thurtell who headed down for Scot Coulson, who finished well. 1-2
As the game drew to a close, Broadmeadow pushed despite their disadvantage, which was added to when keeper Chris Bowling copped a second yellow for pulling back Jony Richter as bith raced from a Magic corner.
In all a good game which went to the better team, despite the efforts to the end by the men from Newcastle.
