Brisbane Roar FC 1 (Emily Gielnik 37′)
lost to
Sydney FC 2 (Renee Rollason 17′, 76′)

By Chris Dunkerley:

Sydney FC, playing away, downed key rivals Brisbane Roar in a dour but combative game between two of the league’s normal powerhouses.

It was fairly clear that Sydney were more ready to press from the earliest, and it was no surprise when Renee Rollason met a 17th minute cross from the left by US import Samantha Johnson, and slotted it into the top of the net.

Sydney FC’s Renee Rollason scored in each half for a brace.   They looked on top for most of the first half until the home side came back into the game before half time.

With the score looking unlikely to change, Sydney was forced to hold on after Teigan Allen received a second yellow, and ordered from the field in the 61st minute.

Sydney coach Alen Stajic tweaked his formation and brought on subs to try to overcome the deficit.  After the sending off of Teigen Allen for a second yellow card, it was Kate Stewart in the home goal that was the busiest.

Later in the game Sydney extended their lead through Rollason just when the Roar should have been capitalising on their extra player. Instead Brisbane looked disorganised and devoid of ideas up front.

Renee Rollason bent her 76th minute free-kick into the top left corner of the net, beating diving Brisbane ‘keeper Kate Stewart.

Katrina Gorry shot onto the upright, from a deflection in the 88th minute, but there was little the Roar could do to penetrate.
