By Chris Dunkerley:

Premiers Canberra United FC went away from Campbelltown today with a comprehensive win over Western Sydney Wanderers FC in round 1 of season 7 of the Women’s National football League.

A brace by Matilda Michelle Heyman in the first half bode badly for the end result for the Wanderers, but though the visitors scored twice more the infusion of young substitutes in the second half made Canberra have to fight for it.

In just the 3rd minute an early release by Canberra ‘keeper Chantal Jones found Ashleigh Sykes free out wide on the left. The speedster cut the ball across to a waiting Michelle Heyman, who streerd her shot well wide of the keeper and into the net. 0-1

Just before half-time Heyman ran onto a clearance by her keeper, and semt the ball into the net. 0-2

At 57 minutes Ellie Brush rose unhindered to a corner from the right, and headed neatly past the Trudy Burke in the Wanderers goal. 0-3

Ashleigh Sykes continued her fine contribution to the game in the 76th minute when she broke down the left, and slipped the ball inside to Caitlin Munoz. The experienced striker squeezed her shot past the post and the keeper from an angle. 0-4

The Wanderers substitutes were combining well on the left as the game approached normal time, and sustained pressure and a number of attempts to get a shot through to target, ended with the ball falling to Demi Koulizakis. Her shot was on target but took a wicked deflection off a defender and wrong-footed Canberra ‘keeper Chantel Jones.

The game ended 1-4
