drew with

Newcastle Jets FC 1 (Edson Montano 62’)

David Villa has once again bailed Melbourne City out of a losing situation, scoring a late goal to salvage a 1-1 draw with Newcastle Jets.

The contest, which saw a scoreless first half dominated by the hosts, was turned on its head early in the second half through an Edson Montano header.

However, Villa again made his presence count to pounce on a loose ball and score the equaliser.

David Williams had the first chance to open the scoring, volleying over Birightti’s crossbar.

The young ‘keeper was shaky early, and City almost took advantage, fashioning a number of half-chances on goal that were scrambled away.

While City were dominating possession, Birighitti only had to make one save for the remainder of the half; an Iain Ramsay volley from outside the box.

David Villa hit the side netting late in the half to have sections of the crowd celebrating.

Chances came and went for both sides in an open second half, with Andrew Redmayne called into action when Flores was through on goal.

When Villa sprayed an easy opportunity to put city ahead, Newcastle went straight up the other end to punish the hosts, with Joel Griffiths crossing in for a well taken Montano headed goal.

Newcastle would have doubled their advantage had the Equadorian composed himself minutes later to control a Johnny Steele lobbed pass.

Newcastle were desperately trying to hold onto the lead, and David Carney blocked two consecutive shots on goal by Aaron Mooy to deny the hosts.

Down the other end, Jeronimo headed the ball into the box for Zenon Caravella to easily finish, but the midfielder inexplicably skied his volley.

Villa punished the mistake, opportunistically blasting a strike past Birighitti’s outstretched arms.

The last action of the game saw Jeronimo left all alone at the back post on a counter-attack, but the striker scuffed an easy shot wide
