Melbourne City have held on to defeat Brisbane Roar 1-0 in a cagey and low-key affair between two sides bereft of confidence.
A contentious second half penalty won by Mate Dugandzic and scored by Aaron Mooy was enough for the hosts to register only their second win of the season, also against Brisbane.
In a scoreless opening half, both sides played cautiously, lacking conviction in the final third.
Two early efforts in the first 10 minutes by Jacob Melling and James Brown missed comfortably, before the former beat Matt McKay to the ball in the attacking third and struck wide from distance.
McKay then fluffed two gilt-edged efforts on goal in similar circumstances from inside the 18-yard box.
The first, a shot following a square ball from Dimi Petratos missed narrowly, before some interplay with Henrique led to a strike that cannoned into the crossbar.
Erik Paartalu then had City’s best effort on goal, rising to meet a Mooy set piece and missing wide from close range.
Just minutes after the break Mate Dugandzic made the most of Daniel Bowles’ contact in the box, going to ground and allowing Mooy to break the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 49th minute.
With Brisbane pushing for an equaliser, substitute David Williams had the chance to double the advantage minutes later from a counter-attack, but inexplicably missed wide from Dugadzic’s delivery.
Melling was the next to spray a clear cut opportunity for the hosts, blazing Williams’ cutback into the stands.
From then on the contest fizzed out as City took a stranglehold on proceedings, with the likes of Melling, Steve Lustica and Jean Carlos Solorzano all firing shots that left the respective ‘keepers mostly untested.
Melbourne held on to register their first clean sheet of the season and ease scrutiny on beleaguered coach John Van’t Schip.
