The Champions snatch a win in Canberra

3pm, Saturday 12 November 2016 – Canberra Stadium

Canberra United FC 1  (Ellie Brush pen 90’+3′)
lost to
Melbourne City FC 2 (Laura Alleway 18′, Melina Ayres 80′)

Premiers and Champions Melbourne City struggled to contain Canberra United at their temporary home ground but in the end they were able to do so, a lot owing to the quality of former Canberra custodian Lydia Williams, and to snatch two goals to the home side’s late consolation.

With Canberra United having the unfortunate bye in Round 1 a home game, albeit away from their normal compact stadium and it’s crowd impact, was welcome.

Canberra dominated early, with three very good opportunities in the first 15 minutes.  Then a soft free kick in Canberra’s half. Lauren Barnes curled in a long free kick, and Laura Alleway (with her marker off the field for attention) brushed off the attempt to cover her by the much smaller Ellie Brush and headed in. 0-1

Canberra continued to press high, and had a further three opportunities in the half – but none converted,

They continued after the break, with Melbourne content to absorb pressure and graft forward at times.

In the 61st minute hearts in throat for the girls in blue and white. Michelle Heyman found space for a shot from the left, and Laura Alleway’s boot could as easily have sent it into the roof of the net, and it did over the bar.

A minute later Heyman’s angled shot saw Williams down at her left post to smother. Williams followed that up with a double save first off Jasmyne Spencer and then off Ochs from close range.

Melbourne City’s snatch and grab was completed in the 80th minute with Melina Ayres getting away free, from a killer Jessica Fishlock ball as Canberra pushed up, to slip it past an advancing Trudy Burke. 0-2

A consolation to the home side, when Spencer was bundled over in the area by Catley. Ellie Brush fired it is, after 2 attempts to get the ball to stay on the spot in the strong wind. 1-2
