Refs penalty call stymies Jets

Westfield W-League – Season 9 – 2016/2017 – Round 5
2:30pm, Sunday 4 December, 2016 – Hunter Stadium

Newcastle United Jets FC 1 (Jennifer Hoy 46′)
lost to
Sydney FC  2 (16′ pen Kyah Simon, Bolger 48′)

A very controversial decision to award a penalty against Megan Oyster in the 16th minute was the key moment in a hard fought contest in warm conditions in Newcastle this afternoon.

Remy Siemsen moved to control the ball in the Jets penalty area under pressure from experienced defender and as she did she seemed to fall sideways under no contact by Oyster who was goal side. Referee Kelly Jones pointed to the spot and Kyah Simon sent the ball just inside newly recruited US ‘keeper Katelyn Rowdland’s right post.  0-1

In the 20th minute US import Arin Gilliland did some great work on the right, cut in and shot – Sham Kharmis in the Sydney goal was able to take.

In the 33rd minute former Jet Georgie Yeoman-Dale looked up and took a shot from 35m which deflected off the crossbar.

In the last minutes of the half Newcastle had two good opportunities but couldn’t bring the scoreline square.

In the first minute after the break the home side pushed the ball into the visitors area, and after being loose, Alanna Kennedy attempted to dribble it clear – only for the ball to bounce to a lurking Rhali Dobson.  She was able to get to ball back in to the area, where it was at last sent into the net. 1-1

Alas for the home side, within 2 minutes Sydney were back in the lead. Nicola Bolger was able to steer a shot over her shoulder and into the net, from a corner in from the left, clipped forward by Simon. 1-2

In the 64th minute Nicola Bolger’s speculator was palmed wide for a corner by Rowland.

In the 73rd minute, more controversy when Kyah Simon had a goal disallowed on a very tight off-side call.

Later pressure by the Jets could not change the scoreline.
