Premiers fall to Melbourne City at home

Westfield W-League – Season 10 – 2017/2018
2nd Semi Final
4pm, Sunday, 11 February 2018 – Perry Park, Bowen Hills

Brisbane Roar FC 0
lost to
Melbourne City FC 2 (Aivi Luik 66′, Jessica Fishlock 72′)

Second half goals to Aivi Luik and Jessica Fishlock ensured that Melbourne City will now have the chance to claim an unprecedented three consecutive Westfield W-League Championships.

With Premiers Brisbane Roar playing at home and with good support in Qld heat, one might have thought they would start strongly but is was an Ashley Hatch cross from the right that Jess Fishlock headed just wide in the 3rd minute that first stirred the fans.

Four minutes later Melbourne’s Lauren Barnes hit a free kick from 35m just over the cross bar.

The rest of the half was fairly equal, though perhaps with City creating the best opportunities.

After half time Brisbane looked more focused and in the 48th minute Katrina Gorry swung a cross from the right to the left only to see Tameka Butt’s connection hit the side netting.

Kyah Simon leapt on a loose ball outside the area and smacked a sizzling strike onto the crossbar with Brisbane custodian Mackenzie Arnold grasping in the 63rd minute.

Three minutes later the first goal came when the Roar failed to clear the ball from their area, and it was struck hard by the experienced Aivi Luik. The shot rebounded off Clare Polkinghorne as she dried to block, and it diverted past

Mackenzie Arnold. Goal awarded to Luik, 0-1.

In the 72nd minute Jess Fishlock leapt at a bouncing loose ball and lifted it over the advancing Brisbane goalkeeper. 2-0

A chance for Brisbane 5 minutes later when Abbey lloyd’s header hit the underside of the crossbar, but fell well positioned for City keeper Lydia Williams to scoop up.

Sydney FC won through to the W-League 2018 Final after they defeated Newcastle Jets 3-2 after extra time at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday.

Sydney will play host to the highly anticipated Westfield W-League 2018 Final at 5pm next Sunday at Sydney Football Stadium between Sydney FC and Melbourne City FC.
