12/11/2011: Australia lost 1-0 to the home side Oman in the 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian Group 'D' Qualifier played this morning Australian Eastern Summer Time. The Socceroos conceded an early goal and could not grab one back. The group remains open and they now play Thailand away.

13/10/2011: The Australian U19 women's team, the Young Matildas, though always competitive have fallen short at the Asian championship having now lost to Asia's powerhouses North Korea 0-1, Japan 0-1, and China 1-3. Even a possible win against South Korea on Sunday will not provide further hope. With the U17 squad struggling against the Kiwis the junior development of the game must be reviewed and it is urgent that the W-League be expanded and properly resourced.

06/10/2011: In a thrilling and see-sawing first game the Westfield Young Matildas have defeated Vietnam 4-3 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in the AFC U19 Women’s Championship 2011. A first half goal to Linda O'Neill 11 minutes in, and a hat-trick to Emily Gielnik in the 60, 62, and 73 minutes. They next play DPR Korea on Saturday 8th. Also in other news the U17s have lost and drawn in Auckland versus NZ in two of three friendlies.

04/10/2011: The Westfield Young Matildas are in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam to compete in the AFC U19 Women’s Championship 2011 against five other Asian countries to qualify for the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Uzbekistan 2012. The 23-player squad will play their first match against hosts Vietnam on October 6 at Thong Nhat Stadium. As the qualifiers for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2012 in Uzbekistan, they will be played over a 10 day period (October 6-16) round robin tournament vs China, DPR Korea, Korea Republic, Japan & hosts Vietnam. Caitlin Friend was a late addition. In other news the U17 Australian women’s team are in New Zealand to play three friendly matches in Auckland.

08/09/2011: The Matildas defeated the host team China 1-0 today in the fourth of five matches of the 2012 London Olympics qualification tournament in Jinan, China. Strong goalkeeping by Lydia Williams then a 62nd-minute goal by Emily Van Egmond was enough as they hung on. They now sit in third place behind Japan and DPR Korea. 07/09/2011: Australia moved top of Group D in their AFC World Cup qualifying campaign with a 3-1 victory over Saudi Arabia at the Prince Mohamed bin Fahd Stadium in Dammam. Josh Kennedy scored either side of half-time to give the Qantas Socceroos a 2-0 lead, before the hosts found a reply through Nasser Al Shamrani. But Luke Wilkshire converted a late penalty to seal the three points With Thailand beating Oman at home the Group is taking on an interesting look.

05/09/2011: The Matildas were defeated 0-1 by world champions Japan today in the third match of their 2012 Olympic qualification campaign. Although no score at haf-time the Australians were under pressure and Nahomi Kawasumi scored in the 62nd minute at Shandong Sports Centre in Jinan, China. The Matildas raced to a 4-0 lead at half-time but struggled to dominate in the second half. The Matildas next play against Japan at the Shandong Sports Center on Monday September, 2011. 02/09/2011: Australia's Socceroos have beaten Thailand 2-1 tonight in front of 24,540 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, but were on the back foot after 15 mins when a break-away goal by Teerasil Dangda rocked the crowd. Two late goals by Josh Kennedy (58') and substitute Alex Brosque (86') gave the home side a welcome 3 points. In the other group game Oman held Saudi Arabia to a 0-0 draw. The journey to a third consecutive FIFA World Cup heats up next week in Saudi Arabia.

24/08/2011: Qantas Socceroos Head Coach Holger Osieck today named his squad for Australia’s opening 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifiers against Thailand (Brisbane, 2 September 2011) and Saudi Arabia (Dammam KSA, Tuesday 6 September 2011). An extended squad of 23 players includes all 18 players who were part of the Qantas Socceroos squad that recently defeated Wales in Cardiff City earlier this month as well as Brett Holman who withdrew due to a slight groin strain. 22/08/2011: Westfield Matildas Head Coach Tom Sermanni today announced his 20-player squad who will depart next week for China to compete for a place at the 2012 London Olympic Games. Returning to the squad are experienced pair Sarah Walsh and Thea Slatyer who have both battled back from injuries that kept them out of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany. Australia’s road to the Olympics begins next month in Jinan, China, in a gruelling six team, 11 day round robin tournament with the top two teams progressing. 22/08/2011: Football Federation Australia (FFA), the South Australian Government and Football Federation South Australia (FFSA) today announced that the Qantas Australian Under 23’s will play their first 2012 London Olympic Games Asian Qualifier against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide on Wednesday 21 September (kick-off 7:00pm). The venues and kick-off times for the remaining matches of the Qantas Australian Under 23’s campaign are expected to be confirmed by the AFC in the near future. Asia are allotted 3.5 slots for the London 2012 Olympic Gamers men’s football tournament.

Top two from each group will go into two groups of 5 - the winners and runners up then taking an Asian spot. The games are: Thailand at home on 2 September 2011, Saudi Arabia away on 6 September, Oman at home on 11 October and away on 11 November, then the Thais away on 15 November and the Saudis at home on 29 February, 2012.

28/06/2011: Australia's Joeys have progressed to the second stage of the FIFA U-17 World Cup. After their first clash was washed out they backed up to play Denmark and after going down in the first half and to 10 men, and being under the hammer for most of the game, they grabbed a very late equaliser for a 1-1 draw. As best third placed team the Joeys will play their fellow Asian qualifier Uzebeskistan on Thursday - who were strong opponents on last meeting (on SBS at 5:45am, after Matildas) - NZ are through also and play Japan.

21/06/2011: The Joeys struggled against an impressive side from Côte d'Ivoire at the Estadio Guadalajara in their opening Group F match of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Mexico 2011, but came back in the second half from behind to snatch a 2-1 win. 06/10/2010: Group D - The Qantas Young Socceroos Australia topped the group and qualified for the quarter-finals of the AFC U-19 Championship with a 0-0 draw with South Korea on Friday. In the 2nd game goals from Mustafa Amini, Kerem Bulut and Terry Antonis secured a 3-0 win over Iran at Linzi Stadium. They first defeated Yemen 4-1 in their opening match in Zibo, China. After conceding shortly after the start of the match, the Qantas Young Socceroos responded with three first half goals through Kofi Danning, Kerem Bulut and Dylan McGowan with Matthew Fletcher finishing the scoring late in the second half. Group C runners-up, the United Arab Emirates, are the opponents on Monday in the quarter finals of the tournament. A win would not only give us a semi finals berth, but would also mean qualification for the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup which will be played in Colombia next July-August 2011 ..

A rebuilding Australia, with new coach Holger Osieck looking on, were very flat. Frank Lowy announced the appointment in Ljubljana this afternoon prior to Thursday morning's fixture against Slovenia at the new Sportni Park stadium. After two Dutchmen, Holger Osieck (aged 62) is a German born football coach. He most recently managed J-League club Urawa Red Diamonds in 2008, and served as an assistant coach of Germany when they won the 1990 World Cup. He also has had two spells in Turkish club football and led Canada to win the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup, plus served on FIFA’s Technical Study Group Committee at the 2010 WC. More details ...

01/08/2010: The Qantas Young Socceroos have won the final of the U-19 Youth AFF Championships tournament in Vietnam beating defending champion Thailand 1-0. A late goal by Eli Babalj was enough to overcome a very tactically disciplined team and make amends for their heartbreaking 2009 loss to Thailand on penalties. Australia had drawn with Thailand in their group. The young team had defeated South Korea 1-0, drew with Thailand 1-1, and won 4-1 in the last game.
